Your student is curious about architecture.

You do not need to know an architect to help them explore this path.

Is this a real career?

Architects help plan buildings and work with clients, engineers and builders. U.S. median pay was $99,280 in May 2025. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $62,300; the highest-paid 10% earned over $161,420. These figures are before tax and are not starting-pay promises. BLS projects 4% job growth from 2025 to 2035; a degree does not guarantee a job.

How long does it take?

A professional B.Arch usually takes five years. Some routes start with a four-year degree, then a master’s. The usual license path also includes approved work experience and exams. Some work can overlap with school. Compare the exact degree and full timeline.

Can we afford it?

Use each college’s net price calculator. Net price means cost after grants and scholarships. Loans must be repaid; work-study must be earned. Write down the amount still to cover each year, including housing, travel, supplies and later study. Compare aid renewal rules. Use the cost lesson to separate grants from loans before comparing schools.

Will there be time for a job?

Studio is a project class with drawings, models and repeated changes. Work continues outside class. Build a sample week with class hours, travel, work and care duties. Ask for a real timetable before committing. Sleep and health matter.

What can we do this week?

Let your student explain one project they like. Set aside 20 minutes to check their next deadline and one cost estimate together. Help gather family figures if an aid form needs them, using the official secure site. Expensive camps or software are not a universal admission requirement.

Are there other routes?

Yes. Drafting often starts with an associate’s degree. Community college can be a lower-cost start when courses and studio placement have a written transfer plan. Landscape design, planning, interiors, construction and engineering have different training routes. Compare the work as well as the pay.
